Treaty #3 turns 150 years old on Tuesday.

Grand Council Treaty #3 held the final celebration honouring the significant anniversary.

Grand Chief Frances Kavanaugh was one of the speakers at a dignitaries ceremony in Kenora and says the Treaty is still relevant today.

“That’s the template we use when we go after some additional lawmaking,” Kavanaugh told an audience of First Nation chiefs, band councillors and federal and provincial representatives on Wednesday at Perch Bay Resort in Keewatin.

“Like we have right now, we have the Child Welfare Law.  We are also working on education and health and others.  That’s the process we follow.”

Kavanaugh adds that for Treaty #3, the document is a sacred one.

“We don’t just don’t necessarily want to follow provincial or federal dictates.  They may provide us a template or guide lines to use, but our guidance comes from the Spirit world…the Creator.”

Those invited included provincial Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford and Michael Ford, the provincial minister for Culture and Multiculturalism.
