Bear sighting in Tamarac puts local school on high alert

By News Sep 26, 2023 | 1:41 PM

Tamarac Education Centre was placed under a hold and secure earlier Tuesday morning after a bear was spotted close to the school.

Principal Rick Welton states in an email to parents it was in place for about an hour and after taking with RCMP and Natural Resources officials students were allowed to go outside for breaks as normal.

“We reported this sighting to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the local detachment of the RCMP.  Both DNR and RCMP visited the school and surveyed the area. Following direction from DNR, students were permitted to go outside at lunch time.  We had extra supervision on during lunch recess and DNR and the RCMP were onsite during this time as well.” Welton wrote in the email.

Welton went on to say they are keeping in close contact with DNR on the matter and encourages parents to get in touch with the school if they have any further concerns.
