There continue to be discussions about the bridge linking Fort Frances and International Falls.

The idea of replacing the bridge has long been considered on both sides of the border and resurfaced with recent discussions on the U.S. side.

It coincides with plans to construct new customs facilities in International Falls.

Representatives from the Minnesota State Bonding Commission looked at the bridge earlier this month.

International Falls Mayor Harley Droba says that was quickly followed by a meeting he had in Fort Frances.

“I got an email asking if myself and the city administrator could join a group in Fort Frances to take a look at the bridge. We were able to go over and meet with both owners of the International Bridge, along with (MPP) Marcus Powlowski, (who) was there looking at the bridge and the project that they have in Fort Frances,” says Droba.

The bridge was also a topic of discussion when Droba and Fort Frances Mayor Andrew Hallikas met recently.

“So, myself and the Fort Frances mayor are going to continue having this discussion and how we can build our communities together. And I think the bridge is probably going to be a lot of those conversations because it’s so important to both sides of our community.”

“It is very politically motivated right now to do something with that bridge, both on the American side and on the Canadian side.”

No dollar figure for building a new bridge has been identified.
