Opposition reacts to labour minister’s departure

By Randy Thoms Sep 22, 2023 | 6:00 PM

The opposition is reacting to the departure of Labour Minister Monte McNaughton.

He is leaving provincial politics for a job in the private sector.

Interim Liberal leader John Fraser had kind words for the former minister.

“I always knew I could trust Monty. I’m going to miss him. And I’m sure he’s not saying this, but he doesn’t want to be any part of this mess,” says Fraser.

While the resignation is not tied to the Greenbelt, NDP leader Marit Stiles questions the timing.

“I think the timing of his resignation is awfully coincidental. I would wonder why he’s exiting, whether he sees the walls closing in on this government as well,” says Stiles.

McNaughton’s replacement was named Friday afternoon.

Former Environment Minister David Piccinin will take over McNaughton’s portfolio.

Andrea Khanjin moves into Piccini’s former post, as well as serving as Deputy Government House Leader.

Todd McCarthy becomes the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery, a position vacated by Kaleed Rashed earlier this week.
