The Queens Place Emera Centre’s ice surface remains closed today as repair efforts continue following an equipment malfunction that occurred on September 18, 2023. Scheduled on-ice activities have been canceled, and individuals with ice bookings for today have been notified.

The malfunction was identified as a small ammonia leak from the condenser located on the roof of Queens Place, prompting immediate action. Authorities have reported the incident to the Department of Labour, Skills & Immigration and the Department of Environment & Climate Change.

Ammonia, which is lighter than air, has been dissipating into the atmosphere as part of the repair process, with the potential of reaching public spaces. As a precautionary measure, the Mersey Skatepark, the Spraypad at Elti Milita’mk Playpark, and the entrance to the outdoor walking trail near the spraypad and skatepark have been temporarily closed until further notice. Barricades are in place to enforce the closure.

While there is currently no known health or safety risk to patrons or the public, efforts are being made to ensure the safety of all visitors. The repair of the condenser is already underway, and updates on the situation will be provided as they become available.
