The proposed ATV bylaw for the Town of Port Hawkesbury will not move forward.

At a public meeting earlier this month, a bylaw was proposed to allow licensed ATV use on all town streets.

Councillor Jason Aucoin, who brought the item forward, said it would be a boost to Port Hawkesbury’s economy, particularly in shoulder seasons.

Following a staff report, the item was discussed at the Bylaw Policy Committee Meeting Tuesday, September 19th.

In a social media post, Mayor Brenda Chisolm-Beaton says, “Council determined this proposed bylaw to be both legally unattainable and as discussed by some members of council, also untenable; some issues outlined were around safety, policing, enforcement and logistical challenges.”

The mayor adds, “Ultimately – there is no legal basis or legislative avenue to allow for the proposed bylaw. “
