An application has been made by Synergy North to the Ontario Energy Board for a rate increase and decrease for its customers in both Thunder Bay and Kenora.

The increase will apply to residential rate payers while the decrease is going to general service rate payers.

In Thunder Bay it would mean residential 750 kWh customers would see a $3.47 increase and general service of less than 50 kW customers would see a $6.19 decrease.

Meanwhile in Kenora residential 750 kWh customers will see a $4.97 decrease and general service of less than 50kW would see an increase of $11.25.

These changes could also affect businesses.

If approved Synergy North plans to have the new rates in place by May 1, 2024.

But before that can happen the OEB will be holding a public hearing to consider the application, where it will question the utility on its case for the rate change, as well questions and arguments from individuals, called intervenors, who have registered to participate in the hearing.

After which a decision on whether or not to allow the rate change will be allowed.

A copy of the application can be found on the OEB’s website.

Anyone who wishes to participate can do so by filing a letter with their comments which will be considered during the hearing, or they can apply to become an intervenor, but must do so before September 25th, 2023.
