The video surveillance program for the Thunder Bay Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police in Greenstone is getting an expansion with funding through the Ontario Closed Circuit Television Grant Program.

Thunder Bay – Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland says the funding will help empower communities to strengthen safety measures.

“This investment in advanced surveillance technology will assist in the fight against crime, protect our neighbourhoods and build a more secure future together.”

A total of 23 police services across the province are tapping into the more than $2.8 million in funding allocated for this year, with the Thunder Bay Police Service receiving $200,000 and Greenstone OPP getting $20,000.

The Treaty Three Police Service was also among the 23 services selected.

The goal is to assist police services as they protect their respected communities from gun and gang violence.

The money can be used to replace outdated equipment, expand or enhance current technology and to install new or additional cameras in areas where gun and gang violence, illegal drug activity and human trafficking are prevalent.
