Mental health supports discussed at Province House

By Kevin Northup Sep 13, 2023 | 10:39 AM

Suicide rates are up in Nova Scotia.

According to recent data, it was over 15 percent per 100-thousand people in 2022, up over 3 percent from 2020.

It was discussed during the province’s standing committee on health.

Liberal MLA Lorelei Nicholl asked what supports are in place for those contemplating suicide.

“And I don’t know, at the end of the day, how you determine whether they’re thriving, surviving or in crisis,” she asked.

Associate Deputy Minister of Mental Health Kathleen Trott said a universal mental health program is a focus, and they want to continue to raise awareness.

She said the province is here for anyone who is thinking about ending their life.

Support in Portapique

Earlier this year, the Mass Casualty Commission recommended more support in Portapique and surrounding communities.

NDP MLA Gary Burrill asked what services are coming.

Nova Scotia Health’s Dana Pulsifer says they’ve hired workers and had a mobile unit in the area.

“An engagement team travelled with that team to gather feedback from individuals community members at that time, on what they were feeling and experiencing,” said Pulsifer.

Pulsifer says they’ll use the feedback to design an approach and model of care for grief and bereavement services in the area.
