Curl Moncton continues to grow the sport

By Tara Clow Aug 9, 2023 | 1:23 PM

Almost $350,000 in federal and provincial funding has been provided to Curl Moncton for renovations.

“We used it for repairing the roof. We did a brand new roof on what we call the head house, above our rental Hall and our bar area and where curlers come off. We had planned on doing the flooring throughout, but post-COVID, the prices in the quotes we had received went up by about 50 percent. So we’re not quite able to do that. Next up, is to do the rest of the roof,” says Curl Moncton president Jeremy Maltais.

He says they are still recovering after the pandemic, and trying to expand their membership, but he adds there is much more than just Curling under their building roof as of late.

“We’ve kind of turned a bit of a corner, but we’re still not in a thriving mode yet. We’re still in growing mode. We’re really hoping to open up our doors to more folks in the community. We have Pickleball now renting out space, and they have a thriving membership as well. So that’s a great partnership. We have a dance studio that’s fully rented in the back of our building as well. We’re just trying to be a little more community-minded and aligning ourselves with great organizations that have a like-minded mentality,” Malais adds.

He says they see around 30,000 people coming in and out of the centre annually.

Curl Moncton has around 350 members, The Pickleball Club has around 300, and the dance community has around 100.

“Our goal is to reach more residents of Greater Moncton, so they can learn about the sport,” Maltais says.

They have two Learn to Curl Programs, one for kids and the other for adults.

Maltais adds they are both very affordable and you get one on one instruction to learn how to court

They’ll be held starting in October this year.

Anyone interested in learning the sport can find more details on the Curl Moncton website.
