A little over 840 thousand dollars from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation is going to two community projects in Oliver Paipoonge.

Just over half, some $486,132, will be going to upgrade and extend the life of six facilities.

Murillo Community Centre:

  • electrical upgrades
  • foundation waterproofing
  • roof and door replacement
  • overhaul of its HVAC system

Murillo Outdoor Rink:

  • rink boards and chainlink fencing replaced
  • improved lighting

Rosslyn Community Centre:

  • electrical upgrades
  • parking lot repairs
  • new window and door installation

Rosslyn Outdoor Rink:

  • rink boards and chainlink fencing replaced
  • improved lighting

Kakabeka Outdoor Skating Rink:

  • upgrades to rink boards, chainlink fencing, lighting and baseball facility

Intola Outdoor Skating Rink:

  • electrical and lighting upgrades
  • new indoor shelter

Thunder Bay – Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland calls the funding a demonstration of the Ford Government’s commitment towards healthy communities.

“These enhancements and upgrades will ensure the facilities remain a safe and welcoming environment for the residents of Oliver Paipoonge and will extend the life of these facilities for future generations.”

The remaining $355,991 is being dedicated to the Norwest Arena.

There it will be having its propane-fueled zamboni replaced with a battery-powered unit, similar to one being used at the Fort William Gardens.

Other improvements at the facility include repairs to the refridgeration equipment, the installation of a new railing, purchasing kitchen equipment and electrical upgrades to automate the arena’s ice plant, enhancing its efficiency and reducing costs.
