Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate a collision between a motor vehicle and bicycle which claimed the life of a 7 year old boy in Long Lake 58 First Nation in the Greenstone area.
Police and Superior North EMS responded to the community located west of Longlac around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
The boy was rushed to hospital but sadly, was later pronounced deceased.
Members of the Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team are assisting with the investigation.
A statement from Matawa First Nations also confirmed the incident and extended its condolences to the boy’s family and his community.
“Our hearts are broken. Our prayers are with the children, family, first responders, and the entire Long Lake #58 community. We join them in mourning the passing of this beautiful child whose young life was taken under the most tragic and heartbreaking of circumstances.”
Following the incident Chief Judy Desmoulin spoke of the effects of colonization and how it is truly taking it’s toll.
Long Lake #58 First Nation lacks adequate road infrastructure, including sidewalks and bicycle paths.
The 35th Matawa AGM, which was to have concluded today, was suspended out of respect for the family and community. Before suspending, all Matawa Chiefs offered their personal condolences and offers of assistance.
A sacred fire was lit and will burn over the next four days.
