A family-friendly event that is a Halifax staple has officially opened for its 30th season.

Shakespeare by the Sea will be entertaining all summer long in Point Pleasant Park, with Pinocchio as well as Romeo and Juliet.

Artistic Director of Shakespeare by the Sea and Director of Pinocchio, Jesse Maclean, is excited to welcome audiences back.

“After three decades of dynamic and thought-provoking productions that have showcased the incredible talent of our artistic community, we are still laser-focused on our mission to provide access to live theatre to as many people as possible. We continue to push boundaries, explore new perspectives, and bring stories to life on stage.”

Drew Douris-O’Hara, co-artistic director and director of Romeo and Juliet, wants this year’s productions to pass on the message to be brave, love proudly, and dare to hope for a better future.

“To me, Romeo and Juliet is about bravery. It’s an act of bravery to pursue love.” Douris-O’Hara highlights, “Love will always conquer hate, hope will always defeat cynicism. There is a cost, and it’s worth it. Romeo and Juliet from the beginning tells this message. Through their obstacles and hardship, love was worth it.”

It is currently the largest outdoor summer theatre festival east of Montreal and is dedicated to the ongoing development of theatre artists in Canada.

Pinnochio opened on July 8 2023 and will run until September 2, 2023. Romeo and Juliet will celebrate opening night on July 21, 2023 and will run until September 1, 2023.
