Wanted woman now in custody

By Adam Riley Jun 30, 2023 | 3:55 PM

Thunder Bay Police have cancelled their request for assistance in the search for a woman wanted in connection to a Westfort homicide Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Jeremy Pearson says the 56 year old woman was taken into custody at a south side business by members of the Major Crimes Unit, following a call from the public, during the noon hour.

She has since been charged with second degree murder and is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Police have also now identified the victim as 67 year old Darlene Giba.

Pearson is also thankful for all the help provided by the public in the days leading up to the arrest, which included a request for video footage from areas near the crime scene, however he is unaware of a connection between that video footage and the latest arrest.

“That footage remains important to us and does help to advance our investigation which although we have made significant strides resulting in this arrest,  it remains an ongoing matter.”

Earlier this week police announced they had arrested a 41 year old city man in connection to the murder, who was already in custody on an unrelated matter.

He appeared in court on Thursday.

Pearson says there was a familial relationship between one of the suspects and the deceased, and a relationship between the two suspects.

However, he was unable to provide any further details involving the interactions between the three at the home at the time of the incident, which is a matter of the ongoing investigation, but is something that is still being reviewed.

Noting the Forensic Identification Unit is still examining the scene.
