Fire has caused extensive damage to an Elmwood Drive home.
Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian McDonald says there were flames coming from the basement of the small two-storey bungalow when they arrived at around 5:30 pm Friday night.
McDonald adds there was a lot of smoke and the fire spread quickly to the second floor,
Everyone managed to evacuate, but firefighters searched for six cats and dogs inside.
McDonald says they managed to rescue all of them within ten minutes, but they had already been overcome by smoke.
Firefighters treated the animals with oxygen and performed CPR, but unfortunately, three pets didn’t survive.
The other three were taken to a local vet where they are receiving further treatment.
One of the residents of the home suffered minor burns but was treated at the scene.
McDonald says 18 firefighters assisted with the fire, and they were able to get the fire under control very quickly.
The majority of the damage is in the basement and main floor of the home.
The Canadian Red Cross is assisting a couple and their two adult children, partners, and two grandchildren by providing emergency purchases including clothing, food and other basic needs. They are now staying with relatives.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the RCMP and Fire Marshall.
