Riverview to offer free sunscreen dispensers for summer

By Tara Clow Jun 7, 2023 | 12:11 PM

A pilot project to help fight skin cancer is returning to Riverview.

It is one of eight Canadian communities that will offer free sunscreen throughout the summer as a part of a pilot project.

The project is led by the Save Your Skin Foundation.

Sunscreen dispensers can be found in Lion’s Community Park and at Special events held throughout the community.

They are automatic and touchless and provide a Health Canada-approved SPF 30 sunscreen.

Last year, the municipalities of Riverview, NB, Summerside, PEI, Brooks, AB, and New Westminster, BC installed dispensers as part of the project. Now, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Lake Cowichan, BC, Richmond, BC, and Westlock, AB are getting ready to do the same.

Dispensers will also be used by the NB Fairs and Exhibitions Association at fairs throughout the summer.

Thirty dispensers are being installed as a part of the project to fight skin cancer.

The Foundation has these tips for applying sunscreen:  It is part of an overall sun-safe way to enjoy the outdoors. First, limit your time in the direct sunlight, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., seek shade, and cover up by wearing long sleeves and pants and a wide-brimmed hat. Use sunscreen, specifically one labelled broad-spectrum SPF 30, to protect the lips with lip sunscreen or zinc oxide. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or after swimming.
