A history-making week for Cape Sable Island’s Jessica MacKinnon.

She was part of Team Nova Scotia’s female hockey team that took silver at the Canada Winter Games in PEI.

MacKinnon scored in a comeback win over heavily-favoured Ontario in the semifinal, as the team went on to win the first ever female hockey medal for our province.

The Newellton native says her team really came together.

“It was a great atmosphere, nobody had anything against each other, we were all part of the same team. Coming together really helped us to be able to do that,” said MacKinnon.

The team fell short in the gold medal game to B.C. the next day.

MacKinnon says the win over Ontario felt like gold.

“That was our biggest goal, to beat them. To have that actually happen, it didn’t feel real at first, so it was definitely a shock. But at the same time we knew we could do it deep down.”

MacKinnon credits her coach, Kori Cheverie, and her teammates for accomplishing something special and becoming one of the best stories of the Canada Games.

She is also thankful for the support, as Nova Scotia had some of the loudest fans at the rink in PEI.

MacKinnon currently plays for Ridley College in Ontario, she played in Nova Scotia until Bantam age.

The 17-year old says her goal is to play for Team Canada one day.
