Extortion scam in Halifax; police warn

Police are warning of a new extortion scam in the Halifax area.

Scammers are calling or texting people accusing them of using an escort service and demanding payment.

They claim to be part of a “cartel”, send graphic photos depicting violence, threatening the victim if they don’t send the money.

Police say not to provide any money and block the number.

Police believe those who are contacted, is random.

You can report a scam where you haven’t been a victim to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.
