A new poll prepared by Canadian Parents for French New Brunswick has found big support for immersion in schools.

The survey conducted by  Leger Marketing found 63 percent of respondents are against abolishing French Immersion programs in New Brunswick.

It also found that 72 percent of those polled feel it’s important for anglophone parents to be able to send their child to a French Immersion school.

Canadian Parents for French NB executive Director Chris Collins says, “This survey just confirms what we already know, parents in New Brunswick want their children to have the opportunity to not just have a conversation, but to be bilingual in all aspects. In the country’s only officially bilingual province, it makes no sense to abolish the current program for this 50/50 model that will not prepare students to be able to get jobs in both the public and private sectors. Parents want more for their kids, and this move doesn’t give them that.”

Other statistics from the survey:

  • 72% of respondents said NB school principals who want to reduce the hours of second language instructions in schools should consult with parents before making the decision
  • 55% of respondents felt the current French Immersion program should be maintained, but made accessible to more students, even if they are not in immersion programs
