A man is facing charges after police say he collided with a car and nearly hit a police vehicle in Saint John.

The incident began in the area of Thornbrough and Somerset streets just after 11 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

Police said a car turning right from Somerset onto Thornbrough went into the opposite lane of traffic and nearly hit a police vehicle travelling on Thornbrough toward Somerset.

“The red car turned left onto Anglin Drive and continued driving erratically crossing into the opposite lane of traffic. It then turned right onto Sandy Point Road, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with another vehicle,” said the release.

Both the driver and the passenger ran off as officers arrived on the scene, according to police.

A 33-year-old man matching the driver’s description was arrested nearby for failing to stop for police, dangerous operation of a vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, and on an outstanding warrant for violating his probation order.

The accused is due to appear in court on Monday. The passenger of the suspect vehicle was not located by officers.

Police said the passenger in the second vehicle was treated in the hospital for minor injuries and later released.
