Ford Provides An Update On CUPE Negotiations

By Tim Davidson Nov 8, 2022 | 12:47 PM

The provincial government isn’t giving any details about their negotiations with CUPE education workers.

Premier Doug Ford says they are back to the bargaining table with an improved deal.

While Ford isn’t saying what their current offer is, he suggests it’s similar to one they pitched to the union last Sunday.

“We did offer a higher amount.  I thought we had a deal.   I was convinced we had a deal and all of a sudden they came back to my office and said there’s no deal.  I was floored.  Anyways, we’ll go back to the table.  We’ll do everything we can.  Hopefully we’ll get a deal and keep the kids in class.”

Ford says he isn’t picking a fight with the union, but says he says to think about the whole province, not just 55,000 people represented by CUPE.

“I never wanted a fight from the beginning but when CUPE walked away from the table, what else do I have?,” Ford said in a press conference this morning.

“I want them to stay at the table.  Lets negotiate.  I don’t care if we negotiate all day, all night, we’ll do it.”

CUPE agreed to go back to the bargaining table yesterday, after the government agreed to rescind Bill-28, the Keeping Kids in School Act.

No date has been given for the legislature to go back and repeal the bill.
