The Yarmouth Mariners salvaged a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to Truro Saturday night at Mariners Centre.
The Mariners found the tying goal off the stick of Jerome Gilbert with three seconds left in the third period, much to the delight of the 1,200-plus in attendance.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says they found a way to earn the point.
“I thought the boys worked extremely hard, but we’ll take the point. Would have loved to have had two, but what a great crowd we had. It was like the old Fishtank here tonight,” says Barron.
That completed a three point weekend, as they defeated Fredericton 8-3 on Friday night.
Yarmouth sits one point back of the Bearcats for first in the Eastlink South Division.
The Mariners hosted Armed Forces Appreciation Night on Saturday, with 104-year old Second World War veteran Jim McRae dropping the puck.
Barron says it was special.
“You can’t say enough about our veterans. Great tribute, and everybody stood up and gave him a standing ovation. That’s a tribute to our town and our great fans.”
The Mariners are back on home ice this Friday night against Grand Falls.
