The Town of Bridgewater is dealing with an increase of vandalism around the community in recent weeks.
Mayor David Mitchell says he learned about the issue after noticing some graffiti over the weekend, after which he spoke with town staff about it who informed him they’ve been seeing an increase in reports of vandalism over the past few weeks.
“They’re reporting lots of vandalism, we had a green bin two weeks ago get spraypainted with something antisemitic and there have been a lot of houses vandalized, all relatively recently,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the vandalism of the green bin was an isolated incident and none of the other incidents of vandalism appear to involve antisemitism.
With town staff now aware of the issue as well as the community Mitchell expects it will stop shortly or the perpetrators will be caught. “We’ve informed the police so they’ll be watching out and with all the cameras around today on things like doorbells, phones, and cars if this keeps up somebody will see something,”.
Upon learning about the recent vandalism Mitchell posted online appealing to residents to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
The sign that was vandalized in Mitchell’s post has since been fixed.
He also noted that although many of the incidents have only required simple repairs or cleaning it still requires town staff to take time out of their days that could otherwise be used to help the community in more meaningful ways.
