Changes have been made to Moncton’s updated animal control bylaw after cat rescue organizations voiced concerns.

City staff consulted with the groups and an animal is now defined as any domestic animal that would be a pet including –  but not limited to – dogs and cats.

Dogs were initially the main focus of the revised bylaw and it wasn’t until it passed first reading that rescue groups realized cats were omitted.

Amber MacDonald with CARMA Cat Rescue was pleased with the changes.

“I’m really looking forward to working with you, with continued communication over the coming months, concerning this and other areas.”

Councillor Shawn Crossman applauded the cat rescues for coming forward and was glad they were able to collaborate with city staff.

“Making sure that you literally hold our hand as we do this because I don’t want to call you experts, but you guys deal with this every day, whereas we don’t.”

Moncton Council unanimously passed second and third readings of the updated bylaw.
