OPP Warn To Leave Election Signs Alone

By Randy Thoms Sep 29, 2022 | 3:05 PM

More municipal election candidate signs are popping up around town.

Ontario Provincial Police Constable Brittany Bembeneck issues a reminder about those signs now that the campaign is heating up.

“It is an offence to remove or damage official election signs. People caught tampering with legally placed signs can face charges under the Criminal Code, including theft and mischief,” says Bembeneck.

She notes most signs are on private property and that leads to additional charges.

“Any person entering onto private property without colour of right in order to attempt to commit an illegal act in relation to this sign is also guilty of trespassing.”

If you witness vandalism being done to elections signs, you are asked to report it to the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
