The latest update from Nova Scotia Power indicated that some Nova Scotians will have to wait until next week for their power to be restored.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there are a little over 100,000 Nova Scotians without power. NSP has indicated that a majority of those outages should be resolved by Friday, though some will take until next week.

We expect the majority of customers to get their power back by Friday, but there will be customers who will be out into the weekend and some into next week.

The remaining outages are primarily concentrated in Cape Breton and the eastern half of the province where post-tropical storm Fiona had its the strongest impact.

Damage in Cape Breton is due primarily to hundreds of broken poles and downed lines due to falling trees, trees on power lines. Washed-out roads are also limiting access and making it difficult for crews to move around.

“We are seeing unprecedented damage to our poles, lines and equipment due to the hurricane force winds from Fiona and thousands of trees that have fallen,” said Matt Drover, NS Power Storm Lead. “With the support of so many, we continue doing foot patrols, using ATVs and flying drones to reach those off-road areas and hard-to-reach places.”

To help facilitate restoration efforts in Cape Breton and the eastern half of the province the Canadian Military has helped set up operations centres for NSP in Sydney and Truro.

More details on the restoration efforts are expected to be provided at a media briefing this afternoon taking place at 2:30 p.m., which will be live-streamed online.
