Flags are at half-mast outside Rothesay Town Hall after the passing of a former town mayor.

Bill Artiss passed away last Thursday at the age of 84, according to his obituary.

Artiss spent several years as a councillor before serving as mayor for two terms from 1993 to 2001 and deputy mayor for two more terms.

He played an “instrumental role” in the amalgamation Rothesay, East Riverside-Kingshurst, Fairvale, Renforth and Wells, according to his obituary.

Artiss also led the construction of the Rothesay Town Hall and the installation of a new wastewater treatment facility.

Before his retirement, Artiss helped plan the commissioning of the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, where he worked as a senior control room operator.
