Warmer weather is leading to the forest fire hazard for much of the Rainy River District being elevated to the high range.

It’s moderate in areas to the east of Atikokan as we head into the labour day weekend.

There was a new forest fire that sparked yesterday.

The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services say it occurred late yesterday afternoon on an island at Pickerel Lake in Quetico Provincial Park.

It has since been declared out.

It is just the eleventh fire to spark in the district this season.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services remind the public to use caution when doing any kind of outdoor burning this weekend.

If you are disposing of yard waste and wood debris, the AFFVS encourages alternative means to burning, such as composting or taking it to the landfill.

If you must burn, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.
