The temporary bridge replacing Kouchibouguac River Bridge Number 1 on Route 133 has closed as construction begins on a new crossing.

As a result, drivers must now take a detour via Highway 15 but about 20 businesses are being bypassed.

Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce CEO Anthony Azard says a new campaign has been launched called “720 Seconds To Support Our Businesses”.

Azard notes how 720 seconds or 12 minutes is the time it takes for the detour.

“Obviously retail businesses are going to be more affected than those who are delivering some type of commercial product. Our restaurants are also going to be affected by this.”

During the campaign, Azard says affected businesses will be promoted on social media using the hashtag #720secsNB to encourage discussion.

“To not only speak about what is going on and the impact on the businesses being affected but also ways to turn this around into an opportunity.”

He says new signage will also be installed to invite locals and visitors to check out those businesses.

The former Kouchibouguac River Bridge Number 1 closed in 2019 and needed to be replaced after Hurricane Dorian caused extensive structural damage.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says construction of a new bridge is getting underway and it should be ready to open in the fall of 2023 – weather permitting.
